New York Life (No. 23 on the 2016 DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity) took swift action in firing Corey Multer, a managing director at the company for more than 20 years, after he wrote a racist and misogynistic threat against Shanelle Matthews, the lead communications strategist for the Black Lives Matter National Network.
Last week, in a private Facebook message, Matthews received the following note from Multer’s account:
“You f*cking racist pig whore. The world would be a much better place if you jumped in front of a moving train. Die!”
Matthews, a former strategist at the American Civil Liberties Union, made the message public in a Facebook post. She said she believes Multer was responding to her thoughts on The Movement for Black Lives’, a collective of more than 50 organizations including #BlackLivesMatter, policy platform released August 1. The platform focuses on domestic policies but also on international issues, including stating support for Palestinians.
“He sent me this message, I assume because I recently made some explicit comments regarding my views on Zionism with which he observably disagrees,” she wrote. {snip}

At 6:27 p.m. the same day [Matthews contacted them], New York Life sent a tweet to Matthews announcing that Multer had been terminated from his position.

A New York Life spokesperson confirmed Multer had been with the company since 1987 and was indeed fired on August 10.
