Secret Service Rental Stolen Ahead of Biden Visit to Detroit

Vice President Joe Biden will take the stage at a big outdoor Labor Day rally here this afternoon. It is his third visit in the Motor City in recent weeks, but it has not gone off without a hitch.

Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan acknowledged that overnight Saturday a U-Haul the service rented to move equipment was stolen. “There was Secret Service property inside the vehicle at the time of the theft,” Donovan said in an e-mail. The Detroit Police Department is investigating, he said.

It is not the first time a high profile visitor has had a vehicle stolen in Detroit. The Rev. Jesse Jackson had his Cadillac Escalade stolen when he was in the city for a rally two years ago. Detroit Mayor Dave Bing also had his Yukon Denali stolen that year.
